Keeping House for the dead: doing local history and preserving mabry-hazen house

Friday, February 7th at 12

Presented by Patrick Hollis, Executive Director of the Hazen Historical Museum Foundation and the Curator of Mabry-Hazen House

Historic house museums are relics of the past in many ways. The most obvious way is they are literally a relic, an artifact of the past. But many house museums continue to tell stories and create programming that are also relics of a bygone era. Tea parties, traditional stories soley about white men, and pristine rooms decorated with antiques cannot sustain these sites. But through engaging, fun, and relevant storytelling, historic houses can reframe how the public interacts with history and how we can use the past to inspire us in the present. Learn how public historians construct impactful and applicable programs that are both timely and rooted in historical quality and stir excitement for a subject most found boring in high school. From seances to historic dinners to risqué tours, hear about programming that worked within the scope of interpretation at Mabry-Hazen House and opened ways for those not necessarily interested in traditional histories to engage with Knoxville's past. Find inspiration to invigorate your own passion for the past and learn strategies for harnessing history to energize your home, garden, and creating new memories worth preserving.
